Income is definitely relative. As someone whose been living in the Bay Area for years on $20-30k per year, this is exactly why I am learning to code! I'm also very interested in building things as I think it's super cool, but the financial incentive definitely doesn't hurt.

12 December 2018, 06:00
Making 100k is good enough for like a family of 4 in the east side as long as you don't live int he city area. A white picket fence type home cost about 250k+ around here but you can actually get a decent home for 150k as well. Source - my experience
11 December 2018, 14:25
This is why Californians are so angry. Cost of living is stupid.
9 December 2018, 00:25
Computer Science and MIS are two great fields to get into app development. Both get paid a pretty penny though if you're more mathematically inclined go the CS route.

Gross pay, net of 35% fed income tax, add in state, local taxes, SS, medical, 401k contributions, etc, gets your $150k down to $75k, from that you have to cover housing, food, transportation, entertainment and what have you... this same old story has existed since time immemorial on the east coast, namely Boston, NYC and Wash DC .... you go into the situation with an end-game in mind... for me it was Wall Street, then part time MBA paid for by employers, ride the 10 yr wave of work/school/promotion/work/school... etc... get the MBA, then get the hell outta NYC... take your NYC work experience, education and INCOME LEVEL and relocate to a place with a better QoL quotient... and live a great life!

In 2010 I worked at a company doing web development. I made $60k. Soon, I was given the opportunity to do an iOS app. After gaining about 6 months experience, I landed a job as a senior mobile engineer making $120k. The key thing that allowed this to happen was supply and demand. At that time, the supply of iOS developers was relatively low. But the demand was very high. Ergo, the $$$ were very high. And it is THIS you want to look for, a new technology that is also in high demand (or where you can predict a high demand). You want to identify the opportunity, get in early, gain experience and then offer your services to the market. You will get paid lots of $$$. And this is the nice thing about technology. Opportunities like this come along regularly.

Well, this is another evidence (along with a look on glassdoor) that I need to go away from Italy once for all. Even with 8 years of web developer seniority and a growing background on blockchain technologies there is no way to manage a salary over 25K/year...Italy could be appealing for a foreigner (tourism, food, pub healthcare, life in general, etc) but the work/professional environment is awful, almost near employees exploiting. I'm really wasting my time in this shitty country.
